PUNCHLESS WELL SLIP OUT

Motherwell  0     Inverness CT  1

A VERY DISAPPOINTING PEFORMANCE From Motherwell saw them rather meekly slip out of the Scottish Cup. Despite retaining the ball for long spells they were unable to break down a packed visiting defence who were interested only in defending once they had snuck the lead.

Within in the first few seconds Motherwell attacked. Lasley found McDonald whose shot on 18 was blocked and cleared by Mann. An error from Marshall in goals allowed Ritchie to gather for the visitors but his poor pass let in Craigan to clear. The Fir Parkers broke with Burns winning a corner. Cleared out to Craigan his 25-yarder saw Brown hold the ball well. A short pass back from Tokely almost had Brown in trouble soon after and the former Motherwell keeper was only just able to clear as Clarkson pressed down. Adams then chipped the ball in though Lasley saw his header held under pressure. However, somewhat against the run of play, Inverness surprisingly took the lead. Wilson took a flick form McBain and with the Motherwell defence slow to close down he was able to control the ball on his knee. Looking up, he smacked a speculative 30-yard effort which appeared to deceive Marshall and dip in underneath the bar. A free kick was then awarded after Wilson went down easily under a Hammel challenge though Marshall comfortably took the effort from Thomson. McBain then conceded a corner after Burns and Lasley had combined. A second and third soon followed and a flick from Adams found Clarkson but Brown held. There was no shortage of possession for Motherwell and they quickly forced another corner after Duncan and Thomson had collided. Fagan attempted a shot on the edge of the box but it was cleared. Inverness were doing little in the way of attacking though a Wilson shot from 18 yards went well wide. Normal service soon resumed with McDonald on the angle having his drive held. A studs-in challenge from Ritchie had Craigan hobbling though Referee Clark ignored. Already Inverness were time wasting with Clark having to point to his watch and hurry play up several times. McCaffrey was then late on Clarkson but play continued. Soon after though Adams won the ball from McBain but a free kick was quickly awarded. Then the linesman had the home fans and players in anger when Burns ran clear on an Adams chip only to be waived off-side when clearly well on. Some over the top tackling by Wilson on Adams brought only a warning from the Referee. Quinn played the ball in and Inverness were lucky to survive as the ball deflected off Duncan and McCaffrey into the arms of Brown. Motherwell kept up the pressure, Fagan and Lasley finding McDonald but he was crowded out. Just before the break Mann conceded a corner after a Burns/Clarkson one-two though somehow the Linesman decided to award a free kick for off side.

Half Time     Motherwell  0     Inverness CT  1

There was little change at the start of the second half in terms of play. After a late Keogh challenge on Clarkson the free kick saw Clarkson get a header in though it didn't trouble Brown too much. Thomson was lucky to escape a booking after he took out Lasley but play was waved on. Motherwell regained possession but Clarkson failed to find McDonald and the move broke down. Burns and Clarkson then did well to work the ball upfield but a poor pass saw McDonald unable to reach the ball. McDonald himself then tried to find Clarkson but waiting to clear was Mann and he made no mistake hooking the ball away downfield. A foul by Wilson on Quinn saw a free kick awarded near the half way line but there were afters by Duncan. Not only did he push Clarkson but then proceeded to kick the ball away but received no card. Stevie Hammel curled the ball over the bar and the chance was gone. Keogh of Inverness then lost possession with McDonald racing upfield but he was blocked out on the edge of the box. Motherwell made a double change, Fagan and Clarkson making way for O'Donnell and Wright on the hour. Wright had no sooner been on the park and he almost made an instant impact. Wriggling past two defenders only a vital Mann challenge stopped him setting up McDonald on the penalty spot. Craigan returned the corner to Burns who was unlucky to see his header glance off Golabek for another corner. This time Wilson cleared to Ritchie and Inverness broke, though Ritchie himself shot well over the bar. A rash McCaffrey tackle on Burns gave Motherwell a free kick 25 yards out though Referee Clark chose still not to use any cards. Burns fired the ball in but Burns got down to hold. Motherwell kept the pressure up with Lasley finding Wright. His cross was met by McDonald but the low angled shot went past the far post with Brown struggling. O'Donnell and Hammel then combined but it was a desperate clearance from Mann which stopped McDonald making the contact. A terrific long ball from Craigan had McDonald racing away well on side but again the linesman was all too quick to raise the flag. Still Motherwell retained the bulk of possession but they could not break the visitors down. Goalbek did well to hook a low Burns cross away. Inverness broke upfield with Wilson finding McBain who shot over. An alleged hand ball then stopped Scott McDonald going clear on Brown though it was difficult to see exactly when the handling occurred. Inverness then brought on Munro for Thomson then replaced Ritchie with Proctor. An attempted shot on the angle from Corrigan had Brown alert to hold. O'Donnell won possession and he found Wright. Crossing in, Burns got on the end but was unable to direct his header on target. Inverness broke away upfield and passed up a great change to finish the game. McBain took a flick on 18 but drove straight at Marshall. With time running out Burns saw his header strike the hand of Munro. However, the move petered out and so did Motherwell's cup hopes for another season.
