DEL BOY'S DOUBLE DELIGHT

Dundee United  0     Motherwell  2

DEREK ADAMS STRUCK TWICE To secure Motherwell a crucial second away win of the season to push them up to sixth. Despite playing far from their best Motherwell looked comfortable at the back and always capable of hitting their hosts on the break.

Early on Leitch was adjudged to have fouled Easton giving a free kick 35 yards out. McIntyre broke forward but was halted by Craigan's timely interception.  Innes returned the ball to Scotland though Corrigan cleared to Pearson. He in turn found Clarkson but his attempt to cross to Adams was met by Archibald. A bit of a dive by McLaren then failed to impress Referee Dallas who waved play on with the former Kilmarnock man showing dissent. Motherwell had a shout for a penalty ignored when Craig looked to have been pulled to the ground by Archibald. Play continued with a long clearance seeing Marshall unable to reach the ball though neither could McIntyre. Craig was then fouled by Duff but the free kick cleared by the same Tannadice player. The home side gained a free kick when McIntyre went down easily under a Partridge challenge though the quickly taken free kick from McInnes was too quick even for his own team.  United pushed forward with Kerr breaking to the edge of the box. Feeding McIntyre his shot went wide though Marshall appeared to have the effort covered.  Scotland then made the by line and his cross for McIntyre was superbly cut out by Partridge who cleared the ball. A quick one-two involving Kerr and McIntyre saw the latter have his shot held well by Marshall. The home side were dictating things with Marshall doing well to stop McIntyre reaching a long McLaren pass. Kerr was next on the attack and finding McLaren the low cross was hooked away by Craigan. Motherwell broke out of defence with Clarkson lay off to Pearson ending in a deep cross. Adams and Innes challenged with the ball breaking to Clarkson though the shot was wide. The home response was a Scotland shot well past. Stevie Craig then went up for a free kick and was pushed in the back by Innes but again this was ignored by Referee Dallas. However, a minute or so later Motherwell did get a penalty. Scott Leitch latched onto a loose clearance to slip the ball through to Adams. He went clear on Bullock and as the home keeper challenged he caught the Motherwell man and a penalty was awarded. There wasn't much in the way of home complaints and Adams dusted himself down to slot home and put Motherwell ahead. A handball by McInnes then brought Motherwell a free kick but despite clear dissent Innes was merely warned of his conduct. Shortly afterwards Hammell found Craig and his lay off was met by Adams though the shot held by Bullock.

There were scared at both ends of the park within a minute when firstly an error by Innes almost let Clarkson in though Bullock was able to clear. The ball went long to Craigan and his header was just held by Marshall. An innocuous looking challenge involving Archibald and Craig had the Motherwell striker down injured and he had to be stretcher from the field. Whilst Motherwell attempted to make a substitution the home side had a free kick headed wide by McIntyre who had space inside the box. Motherwell were then able to bring on Jason Dair in place of the injured Craig. Team-mate Marshall was then on hand to hold a free kick from McLaren whilst shortly afterwards Bullock got down well to smother a Dair effort from outside the box after Adams lay-off. The home side then had a free kick when Leitch fouled McIntyre. Craigan cleared for a corner which Partridge made safe by heading well away. Another show of dissent from McLaren came when an offside decision went against him but there was still no card. It took a tremendous challenge from Partridge to deny McIntyre getting onto a chip forward from McInnes with Adams then repeating the feat on Easton. United were pushing for an equaliser with Partridge on hand to stop Scotland going in on Marshall, the ball breaking for McIntyre though there was Craigan to clear ahead of McIntyre with the home fans screaming for a non-existent free kick on the edge of the box. However, they did have the perfect opportunity to level just before the break. In time added on for the injury to Stevie Craig United were awarded a penalty. A cross into the box saw Partridge and McIntyre challenge. The Motherwell man was adjudged to have tugged the home player who picked himself up to take the spot kick himself, and it was Gordon Marshall the hero for Motherwell as he dived to his right to hold the ball on the line, though Stevie Hammell was booked for kicking the ball away in disgust.

Half Time     Dundee United  0     Motherwell  1

It was Motherwell who began brightest second-half with Clarkson sending a dangerous ball across the box though there were no takers. United responded though Corrigan was did well to deny a ball in reaching Scotland and McLaren.  Latching onto a loose midfield ball Keith Lasley then sent Pearson wide though the cross failed to make it past the first defender. Motherwell were looking much more livelier than in the first 45 and pushed up again. Clarkson saw his 20-yard effort deflected by Archibald for a corner. Craigan met this but again it was deflected behind. Again Craigan met the corner but this time Bullock held it well. Clarkson then raced towards goal before Archibald sent him crashing to the ground. Pearson broke into the box but was eventually crowded out by the home defence. Responding, McLaren forced a corner though the header from Easton was well wide of the far post. A lay-off from Jason Dair then saw Clarkson firing over before the home side made a change. Easton made way for Dodds as the Tannadice men tried to increase their striking options. Dodds was immediately involved as he met a Craigan clearance only for Marshall to hold.  David Clarkson was receiving rough treatment from Archibald and again the home defender climbed all over the young striker resulting in a free kick but still no booking, though the Tannadice defence cleared. McLaren broke forward though his pass to Scotland was deflected by Corrigan to Marshall. A trip by Kerr on Adams then gave Motherwell a free kick which Kerr himself cleared though with in a minute Motherwell had forced a corner which the home defence thorough Duff sent away downfield. What looked like a fair clearance by Corrigan then turned into a free kick for United when Referee Dallas decided it was a foul. Though this was cleared McInnes collapse as Leitch challenged gave them another free kick. This time Griffin fired in a dangerous effort which Marshall did very well to get down to smother at his near post.

A second home change had Scotland making way for former Fir Parker Coyle. A late challenge from Innes had Clarkson writhing in agony but Referee Dallas chose to wave play on with no advantage to the visiting side. A deep cross from Coyle was then cleared well by Craigan though a return soon after had Marshall getting down to hold. It took a clever save from Marshall to keep Motherwell ahead when Dodds got onto a deflected effort from McIntyre. Marshall tipped the ball over the bar and from the corner Partridge cleared to Clarkson but he was unable to make headway. McInnes saw yellow for a foul on Adams though the Motherwell man himself took the free kick which Bullock held. Twice in quick succession Innes fouled Clarkson and for his second effort he too was booked, though Referee Dallas failed to play a clear advantage which had Adams and Dair looking to go clear. Archibald then had to concede a corner as a Lasley-Dair one-two had the home defence struggling. This was cleared to Dodds who went down under an Adams challenge for which Referee Dallas decided was worthy of a booking for the Motherwell man. The home side missed a clear-cut opportunity to level with 13 minutes left on the clock. From a free kick awarded when Adams was adjudged to have fouled McLaren, a knock-on from McIntyre found Coyle some 8 yards out but he blazed over. A late challenge from Duff on Lasley gave Motherwell a free kick 30 yards out. Craigan rose to head towards goal but Bullock held the effort. Lasley then found Leitch but his low shot again was saved. It was Motherwell looking more likely to double their advantage with Dair unlucky to see his low shot on the turn drift narrowly past the post.  Great play from Keith Lasley saw him find Clarkson and although his first shot was blocked the follow-up was only just held by Bullock. Upfield Martyn Corrigan did well to deny Dodds who, upon receipt of the corner, hooked the ball over the bar under pressure. A fantastic pass from Scott Leitch then sent Dair wide. Finding Clarkson it took a vital interception from Innes to deny him at the expense of a corner which Craigan headed over. Pearson then made a terrific run to force a corner and although Archibald cleared Motherwell made sure of the points almost on full time. A long punt upfield by Hammell caught the home defence out. As Bullock raced out to meet Clarkson the young Motherwell man controlled the ball for Adams and at an acute angle outside the box he chipped the ball home to send the visiting fans wild.
