Inverness Caledonian Thistle  1     Motherwell  3

A DOMINANT SECOND HALF PERFORMANCE Saw Motherwell see off their hosts to win a place in the Quarter finals of the CIS Cup. A noisy travelling support, outnumbered by a quiet home crowd, helped to ensure it was Motherwell who won the tie.

The Fir Parkers pushed up from the start, Corrigan sending McBride wide and his cross was met by Clarkson but he was adjudged to have fouled Tokely. A Foran long ball saw McCaffrey cut out the pass just as McDonald looked set to pounce, turning the ball via McBain to Brown. Opposite number Marshall was called upon for the first time when he had to take a deep cross from Wilson soon after. A late lunge from Wilson went unnoticed with Corrigan the recipient lucky to escape injury. Hislop then went down in a heap under a Leitch challenge, and from the free kick taken by Hart the ball was comfortably taken by Marshall in goals. The home fans screamed for a penalty when Kinniburgh won fairly from Prunty who collapsed when challenged. Slack midfield play in the home ranks then gave Leitch a chance to break but he failed to find Clarkson with McDonald in a better position. Keogh was late as Hammel cleared with a free kick the outcome. Leitch did better a minute later to find McDonald wide but the cross fell behind Clarkson and Golabek hooked clear. Foran was next to try and make a telling pass and although he picked out O’Donnell the midfielder was unable to get the ball past Hislop to McBride. However, O’Donnell did send Clarkson clear with a superb pass but a poor, late offside flag halted his progress. Some slack defending by Motherwell gave Inverness a chance.

Prunty looked to have ran the ball out but got in a cross which, when knocked back, was driven over by Wilson in good position. Motherwell were sitting back somewhat and McBain gathered possession though his shot was high and wide. Hammel took the ball upfield on a run and although he found McBride another terrible offside decision halted play. Hislop combined with Hart to create an opening for Inverness but good covering by Kinniburgh forced Hart wide and he failed to cross effectively. Motherwell broke forward and Foran found O’Donnell though the shot deflected through to Brown. Hislop again slipped a pass through the middle though superb work from Marshall denied Wilson the chance to shoot. McDonald of Motherwell was then brought down by Hislop giving the visitors a free kick. Fully recovered, McDonald turned on the edge of the box but drove over. The games first booking saw McCaffrey carded for a cynical pull at McDonald’s shirt. Kinniburgh knocked into the path of O’Donnell but his shot was deflected behind.  Met by Craigan, the corner was headed over. A great ball from Leitch sent McBride wide, and his pass to Corrigan won a corner. Inverness burst away up field with Hislop breaking into the box, his shot hitting the side netting though fooling the home fans who thought he’d scored. A poor throw from Marshall only found Wilson though fortunately he drove well high.  As the half came to a close it was Motherwell who ended on top. O’Donnell won a corner from Corrigan’s ball, Kinniburgh had his shot blocked allowing Hislop to hook clear. McDonald was then fouled by McCaffrey, the free kick falling to Kinniburgh who shot wide.

Half Time     Inverness Caledonian Thistle  0     Motherwell  0

It took Motherwell just a minute to make a telling start to the half as they took the lead in devastating fashion. Pouncing on a Wilson error Foran skipped past a couple of challenges and drove low into the net beyond former Fir Parker Brown for his first competitive Motherwell goal. The home side tried to hit back with Hislop looking to find Prunty though Marshall gathered. Hislop then set up Munro but he sent a shot wildly over the top. McDonald almost got clear on a Corrigan forward ball, McCaffrey nipping in to make the interception. Timely then made a last-ditch block to concede a corner from Clarkson, and within seconds it was Motherwell who doubled their advantage. A loose ball some 40 yards out was pounced upon by Phil O’Donnell and he raced clear, steadied himself on the edge of the box, and slipped the ball into the net leaving Brown helpless. The home side tried desperately to pull a goal back, forcing three successive corners before Marshall ended the danger.  They then made a double change, Prunty and Hislop making way for Juanjo and Bayne respectively. And they had hardly taken the field when Inverness had pulled a goal back. A free kick was met by Tokely and his initial shot was parried by Marshall only to finish the follow-up unchallenged. Motherwell hit back, McDonald forcing a corner which Craigan headed wide. Kinniburgh was then adjudged to have fouled Hart and from the free kick Wilson could only head wide of the target.

Top notch defending from Kinniburgh then denied Juanjo on the edge of the box, the follow up from Keogh going well over. Brown kept his side in it when racing from goals as McDonald bore down on a forward ball.  Terrific build up from McBride and Corrigan almost let in McDonald, McBain conceding the corner. Met by Kinniburgh the ball deflected into the hands of Brown. Although Motherwell looked dangerous on the break, Inverness were still in things and it was Marshall on hand to maintain the visitors’ lead. Hart met a pass flush and his drive was expertly tipped over by the alert Marshall in goals. Leitch cleared, though the home side continued to press. A clear dive by Juanjo was ignored by Referee Toner just a minute later. A third home change saw Keogh make way for Duncan.  Teammate Tokely attempted to double his scoring tally but was wide from 25 yards. Motherwell then made a change, Clarkson replaced by Paterson. They almost made the game safe when McBride’s superb run saw McDonald chip towards goal. Brown was on hand, however, to tip over for a corner. Wilson went breaking upfield though he was denied by Hammel. Play swung upfield with O’Donnell driving a Foran knockdown over. With 8 minutes to go the game was made safe by some quick thinking. Munro brought down Foran wide on the left, and an instant take from Hammel to Foran saw a low cross tucked away by McBride. The response from Inverness was a Golabek shot over. Paterson was then fouled by Tokely, Motherwell taking advantage of the stoppage to substitute McBride for Fagan. As time ran out a long ball from Corrigan had Foran well on side but despite having run from his own half the offside flag rose again. However, Motherwell remained victorious to progress.
